about AfSAI
African Scholars Association Ireland (AfSAI) is a voluntary, membership-based scholarly association founded in 2018 to serve African PhD holders and PhD candidates across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. We were established to create a structured, credible platform where African scholars can connect, collaborate, and contribute meaningfully to academic and societal advancement.
AfSAI brings together a diverse community of interdisciplinary researchers whose expertise spans health sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts, policy, education, and community development. Our members are united by a shared commitment to intellectual excellence, rigorous scholarship, and responsible leadership within and beyond academia.
We recognise that African scholars in Ireland contribute significant intellectual capital to universities, research institutions, and public discourse. At the same time, many navigate challenges such as academic isolation, limited mentorship access, and underrepresentation in decision-making spaces. AfSAI exists to provide a structured response to these realities.
Through mentorship, collaboration, policy engagement, and professional development initiatives, we create opportunities for scholars to strengthen their research impact and expand their professional pathways. Our platform fosters dialogue across disciplines and sectors, ensuring that scholarship is both visible and practically relevant.
At its core, AfSAI is a community grounded in dignity, integrity, diversity, and inclusion. We are committed to building an environment where African scholars are supported, connected, and empowered to lead, contributing meaningfully to Ireland’s academic landscape and to global conversations on research and development.
Our Mission
To be the leading African scholarly community in Ireland, shaping policies and innovations for local and global impact.
Our vision
To advance and amplify the contributions of interdisciplinary research, policy influence, and global collaboration.
our foundational principles
Our work and relationships are guided by four foundational principles:
Dignity
We respect the inherent worth of every individual and their intellectual contribution.
Integrity
We act ethically, responsibly, and with accountability in all engagements.
Diversity
We value interdisciplinary perspectives, cultures, lived experiences, and knowledge systems.
Inclusion
We intentionally create welcoming spaces where members can participate fully and flourish.
These values shape how we collaborate, govern, and represent our community.
